Abstract: The Imperial Statistical Office of the German Empire carried out an investigation on poverty and collected for 1885 detailed data on the extent of municipal care for poor people. Due to this data collection the number of persons, the extent of the assistance provided, and the reasons for the social need can be specified exactly.
